فيليب والسينغهام سرجانت

لاعب شطرنج بريطاني

فيليب والسينغهام سرجانت (بالإنجليزية: Philip Walsingham Sergeant)‏ هو كاتب بريطاني مختص في لعبة الشطرنج وفي مواضيع تاريخية شعبية.[1][2][3] ساهم في تأليف الطبعات الخامسة (1933) والسادسة (1939)، والسابعة (1946) لكتاب الإفتتاحيات الحديثة في الشطرنج، الذي يعد عملاً مرجعياً هاماً في إفتتاحيات الشطرنج. وكتب أيضا مجموعة من السير الذاتية لكل من الاعب الأمريكي بول مورفي «أدوار مورفي ومقتنياته» (1916), واللاعب المجري رودلف شاروسك «أدوار شاروسك»(1919)، واللاعب الأمريكي هاري نيلسون بيلسبري (مشوار بيلسبري في الشطرنج، مع الكاتب واتس 1922)، وكتبا قيمة أخرى مثل قرن من الشطرنج البريطاني (1934) وبطولة الشطرنج (1938). كتب غاري غولومبك عنه:

فيليب والسينغهام سرجانت «دون أي إدعاء منه لمهارات أستاذ شطرنج كان يمثل جامعة أوكسفورد في المنافسات الشطرنجية ما بين 1892 و1895» فيليب والسينغهام سرجانت

و عد كتابه «قرن من الشطرنج البريطاني» أن يكون أفضل كتاب عن الشطرنج، رغم أنه يرى أن كتبه كانت لامعة في الشطرنج، إلا أنها كانت تحوي خللا بحكم أن فيليب سرجانت لم يكن أستاذا، فلم يكن يملك الكفاءة المطلوبة ليجيد التعامل مع التعليقات التوضيحية في أعماله.

كان إدوارد غوثلاك سرجانت ابن عمه من درجة ثانية
