This governorate is considered the last stop of the Nile River, the main artery of several African countries. Thus, Damietta Governorate is characterized by its direct a ffiliation to the c ountries of the Medit erranean b asin as well as to the continent of Africa and is a little more than 100 km far from the continent of Asia. This privileged location made Damietta a unique tourist site, and the ancient history testifies that it has always been one of the entry gates to Egypt through history. In Damietta, domestic and foreign trade has been vigorous, and this made its people work in agriculture, industry and fishing t o the ex tent that it h as become the mos t famous place in the fiel ds of agriculture, confectionery, furniture, dairy products, footwear, textile, fishing and shipb uilding. People of Damietta have a long history of defending the homeland against colonizers and in vaders. For example, Damietta confronted the French campaign and the Crusades. In one of these Crusades, the people of Damietta captured King Louis IX of France. All these factors have made the residents of Damietta a people with a sense of patriotism and appreciation of the value of work. Moreover, the charming nature of Damietta has given its people distinctive features, as they are characterized by kindness of the heart and rspect for science, arts and literature as a distinctive sign for all the inhabitants of the old cities where the characteristics of civilization, urbanization, and the meanings of culture and education have been established. Hence, there appeared in Damietta an unlimited number of scientists, on top of whom is Dr. Ali Musharraf, and a number of scholars, poets, and artists including Taher Abu Fasha, Farouk Shousha, Latifa Al Zayat, - DAMIETTA UNIVERSITY GUIDE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS Aisha Abdul Rahman (Bint Al Shati), Riad Al Sunbati and others. The wonderful environment of Damietta has also produced great philosphers like Zaki Naguib Mahmoud. Damietta is also proud of being the home of the hero Rifaat al-Jammal, known in the field of drama as Raftal-Hajjan. Damietta University is an academic institution that started as a branch of the prestigious Mansoura University in 1976. The establishment of various faculties in Damietta continued until they reached eight faculties. Damietta University became independent in 2012, m arking the beginning o f a jo urney towards achieving the goals and aspirations of the surrounding community and environment. Currently, the number of faculties and distinctive programs in Damietta University is growing. Its infrastructure is also being developed to cope with the modern media of education. The teaching methods in the university vary to suit the various personality patterns of learners and their learning methods, in an integrated educational system that ensures educational quality that provides students with specialized skills and various knowledge that prepare students in a way that meets the needs and requirements of the labor market. The student at Damietta University receives knowledge within a modern university that has an ambitious strategic plan, a community that sanctifies the v alue o f w ork, and a ch arming en vironment th at is beautiful. Prof.El Sayed Mohamed Dadour Damietta University Rector - Location 2 DAMIETTA UNIVERSITY GUIDE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS Damietta Governorate Damietta Governorate is in the north-eastern part of the Arab Republic of Egypt, with a population of more than one million and its capital is the City of Damietta. Some historians and archaeologists mention that North Egypt was divided into 20 provinces; Damietta was the seventeenth province. Its ancient name was "Tamheet: the north province or "Tim Ati”: the city of water or the city of the watercourse. The history of Damietta Governorate extends through the ages from the Pharaonic era through the various historical ages until the modern era. At the beginning of the 21st century, Damietta witnessed a cultural transition. Several develoment projects and civilizational coordination have been carried out in the cities of Damietta and Ras El Bar. Several human development projects have been implemented in Damietta such as the Public Library, declaring Damietta the first Egyptian governorate free of illiteracy and implementing the second smart village in Egypt. - 2 DAMIETTA UNIVERSITY GUIDE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS Damietta Governorate Climate Damietta follows the climate of the Mediterranean region: hot and dry in summer, mild and rainy in winter, with an average temperature of 22 °C. In summer, the Mediterranean breeze blows, soothing the temperature and in winter the west wind blows on the North of the Delta region loaded with rain clouds and falls across the coast. Recreational and Archaeological Tourism Damietta is rich in various historical events over the ages. Historically, it dates back to the pharaonic times as it was a subsidiary territory of the region of Baramon, currently known as Albaramon. Damietta is considered one of the most promising governorates with its archaeological wealth. It has a lot of important collections of archaeological hills, especially in the area of Lake Manzala and its banks and in the area west of the Nile. The archaeological remains show the richness of these archaeological areas. Recently, the Authority of Antiquities has begun to uncover underground treasures as well as the recovery of an enormous collection of sunken monuments in the Mediterranean Sea in front of the coast. Damietta Governorate has many important monuments dating back to the Roman, Islamic and Coptic eras. It has witnessed the opening of three archaeological mosques which have been restored: Amr Bin Al-Aas Mosque, Al- MU'ayn Mosque and Alhadidiy Mosque. Airways Damietta Governorate is near several airports, including Cairo International airport, Alexandria Airport and Port Said Airport. It is also connected to these airports by distinguished highways. Faculty of Education was the first faculty to open in 1977, then the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Commerce in the academic y ear 1985-1986, the Faculty of specific education in 1990, the Faculty of Applied Arts 2004 and the Faculty of Agriculture, the faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Physical Education in the academic year 2006-2007. In 2012, the presidential decree No. (19) was issued to establish Damietta University in New Damietta City. In the academic year 2018-2019, the study started in three new faculties: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Archaeology. Three faculties are located on one campus in the district of Al-Assar in the city of Damietta: the Faculty of Applied Arts, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Agriculture.
