وفي نفس اليوم الذي بدأت فيه العملية البرية، ظهر شريط فيديو للجنرال [[سهيل الحسن]] في الجيش السوري وهو يتحدث إلى الجنود في دمشق بينما كان يحرسه جنود روس وسوريون. وقال الحسن في كلمته: “إن دمشق تنتظركم، لكي تلبوسها النصر... مع الله، سنكون منتصرين، وبالإيمان، سنكون منتصرين. تذكر أن كل واحد منكم قرر القتال للدفاع عن الحقيقة والكرامة وإنقاذ سوريا وشعبها”. وفي نهاية اليوم، ادعى جيش الإسلام أنه قتل 70 مقاتلا مواليا للحكومة وأسر 14 في اليوم الأول من الهجوم البري. وعلى النقيض من ذلك، أفاد المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان، وهو جماعة ناشطة مؤيدة للمعارضة تتخذ من المملكة المتحدة مقراً لها، عن مقتل 13 جندياً وستة متمردين، في حين تم أسر جنديين.
