أول كويكب يكتشف من كويكبات قنطور كان الكويكب [[ 944 هيدالغو ]] في عام 1920 طبقا لتعريف [[مختبر الدفع النفاث]] الأمريكي. ولكن لم تتبين مجموعة تلك الكويكبات إلا بعد اكتشاف [[كويكب شيرون ]] في عام 1977. أكبر كويكب معروف منها [[كويكب شاريكلو]] الذي يصل قطره إلى نحو 260 كيلومتر ، حتى أن له حلقات . اكتشف الكويكب شاريكلو ونظام حلقاته في عام 1977. إلى أن الكويكب المفقود {{mpl|1995 SN|55}} من كويكبات قنطور ربما كان أكبر منه.

{{As of|2008}}, three centaurs have been found to display comet-like [[coma (cometary)|coma]]s: [[2060 Chiron|Chiron]], [[60558 Echeclus]], and [[166P/NEAT]]. Chiron and Echeclus are therefore classified as both [[asteroid]]s and [[comet]]s. Other centaurs, such as [[52872 Okyrhoe]] and [[2012 CG]], are suspected of having shown [[Coma (cometary)|comas]].
