عام 1393 خسر القيصر إيفان عاصمته المجرية نيكوبوليس على ايدي العثمانيين، بينما شقيقه ايفان ظلّ متماسكا امام الغزو العثماني في فيدين . في نظر النبلاء البلغاريين المجر كانت تلك الحملة العثمانية فرصة لعكس مسار الفتح العثماني وتحرير البلقان من الحكم الإسلامي. خشية من سيطرة العثمانيين على نهر الدانوب و المضائق التركية بالتالي احتكارها طرق التجارة بين أوروبا و البحر الأسود [6]

قدّر المؤرخون بالقرن 19th المقاتلين من كل جانب بـ 7،500-9000 من الجيوش المسيحية وحوالي 12،000-20،000 من الأتراك، [4]
