تتضح تسمية الميثيلين من قرابته لغاز [[ميثان|الميثان ]] المتكون من ذرة كربون مرتبط بها اربعة ذرات هيدروجين . وكما في الشكل : جزيء الميثلين هو عبارة عن جزيء ميثان منزوع منه ذرتي هيدروجين ، فهو يعتبر [[جذر حر|جذرا حرا]].
