الوصفHuman effigy pipe 01 - Cleveland Museum of Art (30739647306).jpg
Pipe in the shape of a human being, on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.
Made by an artisan of the Adena people from pipestone some time between 100 BC and 100 AD and found at the Adena Mound near Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, in 1901.
The pipe is in the form of a standing male, perhaps an ancestor, a hero, or a shaman. He wears large spool-shaped ear ornaments, a loincloth with a feather bustle at the back, and a bifurcated hairdo typical of a high-ranking individual.
Tobacco was burned in the tiny bowl between the figure’s feet, with the smoke traveling through a tube in the body to the mouthpiece on top of the head.
In 2013, the piece was designated Ohio’s official state artifact.
